Day 32 – Christchurch to Picton (Marlborough Sounds)

This morning I really wished I could stay in bed few extra hours. Alarm started at 6.15am and after snoozing it a couple of times I couldn’t avoid getting up. The room was very cold since the night before but inside the bed was fortunately very warm. Only when I was leaving the room I realized that the heater was behind a big curtain by the corner of the room. My fault..
Anyway, the guy came to pick me up very punctual and we started driving north. The landscape is amazing: green and blue with high hills right above the sea and big mountains with sparkling white snow on their top as far background. We reached Picton around lunchtime. The bus was empty because the rest of the group will join us here tomorrow and then the real journey will start. Everything is much cheaper than in Australia which is also very good for my finance. Picton is a little lovely town of once sailor-men and fishermen. Now its importance is given by the big ferry that connects South Island with its Northern sister. The town is a mix of old images I somehow have already seen: imagine Capri and the Amalfi coast together with the Norvigian fiords. Put them all into a mixer and Picton could easily be what comes out!
I went for a long walk in the forest and around the shoreline. Small elegant houses all scattered around on approximately five bays. I returned to my hostel around 5pm. I will cook here tonight and will go to bed early. I start feeling sleeping withdrawal symptoms... I almost fell asleep on a bench at lunchtime like an old man!
